Dark Horse—The Diary Of Emily Pratt Slatin: Volume 2 is a collection of rural Vermont essays about firefighting, EMS, survival, memory, hard winters, and living openly as a lesbian in small-town America.
Across nearly five hundred pages, Emily Pratt Slatin documents the years after a lifetime spent in emergency services—the years where grief becomes quieter, friendship becomes rarer, and survival slowly gives way to something more difficult: learning how to actually live. Written from her farm in rural Vermont, these diary entries move through the death of her parents, the loss and reclamation of her childhood home, lesbian identity, intersex history, autism, trauma, loyalty, rescue work, memory, pine forests, freight trains, old friendships, new love, and the strange emotional architecture of middle age. The result is not a conventional memoir. It is sharper than that. Stranger than that. More intimate than that.
